A design that originated during the Roman Empire, sleigh beds became popular in America around 1815. Cabinetmakers in virtually every city from the East Coast to the Mississippi built sleigh beds during that period. Reminiscent of horse-drawn sleighs, today they offer an extra secure and cozy place to sleep.
